Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's early TV appearances. Because of their fear of stress, the parents were not keen to let the actress pursue acting until she turned age 18. Perry claimed that she was too shy to act during high school, but started performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry began her career with New York after graduation, getting small roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry go back to California and find work as a stage actress. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. Perry was in the show with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry had an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. She played the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the role via an audition.
